After working for years in the restaurant business, Robert Steinhilber decided to get away from Norfolk’s “city life” and moved to the country. It was 1935 when he purchased the site of Lynnhaven Golf and Country Club on the Lynnhaven River.
Thalia Acres, as it came to be known, emerged as a weekend retreat offering horseback riding, canoeing and hiking. “Steiny” was clearly missed in the restaurant world and friends soon convinced him to return to the business. In 1937, building on the original foundation of the clubhouse, he personally began the construction of the present main dining room. In 1939, after marrying Marion Eley, he opened the doors to what has become one of the oldest family owned and operated restaurants in Virginia, Steinhilber’s Thalia Acres Inn. Try their bacon-wrapped filet mignon.
