The Merlot grape is low in tannins and makes wine that matures faster and is softer in texture. Select Merlots have long aging potential, but most are ready to consume in 4 to 8 years. Theirs is aged in American oak for eighteen months and is well-balanced, with a rich and silky texture, big cherry nose and round tannins – ready for your finest meal or favorite guests. A medium-bodied wine, it really shines when paired with game birds, veal, lamb or pork. It is perfect for just sipping, too.

5. Poseidon’s Red, Mermaid Winery, Norfolk, Virginia

6. Octagon 2010, Barboursville Vineyards, Barboursville, Virginia

Fine garnet color with very forthcoming aromas of lush, fresh fruit, emphasizing ripened cherry, with well balanced secondary berry aromas and flavors, still very youthful. A vintage favoring elegance over density, as in Octagon IV (1999), the wine benefits from a period of decanting before serving and opens with great warmth, showing fine age worthiness.
