Shockoe Bottom’s “HOT” spot, will capture the essence and mystique of what it truly means to be in the fire service. The restaurant is a virtual museum and tribute to past and present firefighters of all jurisdictions. They have accomplished this by creating an atmosphere that is comfortable to all members of the fire service as well as an awe inspiring ambience for the general public. The focal point of the bar is the 1973 Seagrave fire engine that was donated by Mangohick Volunteer Fire Department. She will proudly serve her remaining days memorialized at the Halligan Bar. The owner, a veteran of the fire service, has provided a vision which displays all the traditions and passion of firefighters who have served and still serve today.

5205 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23230 | 1110 Alverser Drive, Midlothian, Va 23113
Website | Facebook

Extra Billy was the nickname given to William Smith, twice elected Governor of Virginia in 1845 and again in 1863. He earned the name “Extra” because of the extra effort he always made for his constituents and in practically every activity he undertook.

When the stage carrying the mail overturned, Extra Billy personally took the time to direct its up-righting in a pouring rain. He had the courage to literally fight for what he believed: his thumb was nearly bitten off during a fistfight in the halls of Congress. Throughout his command as a General during the War, Extra Billy’s commitment to the South drove him to brave the line of fire with his men.

Extra Billy’s pledges to make the extra effort and take the extra time in everything they do for their customers. It’s because they have the courage to uphold this commitment.

5. Benny’s BBQ

3044 Stony Point Rd, Richmond, VA 23235
Website | Facebook | Twitter

They haven’t competed with a famous TV chef. Haven’t sold t-shirts with a clichéd joke about pork butts, or ever uttered the words, “that’s slap yur mama good.” Benny’s is all about great barbeque. Simple as that. They smoke their meat nice and slow. They never mask quality with fancy schmancy sauces and spices. All you taste is 100% natural, juicy awesomeness (how’s that for a t-shirt?). Every sandwich and platter is chopped to order and all of the sides and desserts are homemade. Head over for game day, local brew happy hour, or one of their live music nights. Or get your order to go. But really, why would you? They’re fun people.

6. Virginia Barbeque

11552 Busy St, N Chesterfield, VA 23236
Website | Facebook | Twitter

They started their first Virginia Barbeque in a 100-year-old home on the main street in Ashland, Virginia in May 2000. They wanted to keep it simple, specialize in serving good food with quick service at a good price. Their goals are to branch out and grow Virginia Barbeque into a chain that is known for being a part of the fabric of the community. They want to be the place you think of when you get that desire for good old fashioned service and great tasting comfort food (like yummy smoked barbeque) that you have grown up enjoying.

They decided from the beginning that they would “keep it simple.” Only authentic freshly made side items and true wood-smoked meats would be served.
