This historic landmark is a venue for everything: music, Broadway, children’s plays and fashion shows. It was originally built in 1926 as a shrine temple.
2. Virginia Repertory Theatre

In 2012 Barksdale and Theatre IV combined their efforts to create Virginia Rep. The Virginia Rep Center has two theaters inside, and their November Theatre is absolutely stunning.
3. The Hippodrome Theater

The Hippodrome Theater is more of a gathering place than a theater, now. It was orginally built as a vaudeville venue in 1914. It would later be the host of such stars as Ray Charles, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. There is a dance floor, two bars and a balcony in this historic theater.
4. Firehouse Theatre

The Firehouse Theatre is a contemporary theater that is perfect for people interested in the local arts community. They are dedicated to showcasing off Broadway shows. At least one new play debuts at Firehouse Theatre each year.
5. Swift Creek Mill Theatre

Swift Creek Mill Theatre is in an old 17th century gristmill. It has been a wonderfully intimate theater since the mid 60s.
6. Modlin Center For The Arts

The Modlin Center For The Arts, is a state of the art venue for academics, music, plays and performing arts of any kind.
7. ComedySportz Improv Theatre

As a huge fan of improv, I must include ComedySportz Improv Theatre. You can sit back and laugh at a show or you could take a class or enroll in their summer camps, and actually participate!
8. Hanover Tavern

Hanover Tavern & Barksdale Theatre have a rich history. It boasts the first dinner theater in the nation, and the first theater to allow integrated audiences during the time of racial segregation.
