Dr. Sudha Patil (left) has an extraordinary palate as well as an undergraduate degree in chemistry. In the short time since Narmada Winery opened its doors in November 2009, her skills in both the art and the science of winemaking have brought accolades. Sudha’s primary focus at Narmada Winery is to create graceful, elegant and food-enhancing wines.
2. Shepherd Rouse, Rockbridge Vineyard, Raphine, VA
Shepherd Rouse, along with his wife Jane Millott-Rouse, are the owners of Rockbridge Vineyard. His winemaking style of traditional small batch methods with minimal processing allows him to capture the essence of the vineyard in the glass. The result: well-crafted, affordable wines.
3. Jocelyn Kuzelka, Stanburn Winery, Stuart, VA
Stanburn Winery is happy to have Jocelyn Kuzelka as the winemaker. She moved to Patrick County as a teenager, and moved back to the county again after college and after starting out in the wine industry in Australia. She received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in Biochemistry and then received her masters of Oenology from the University of Adelaide in Australia. She is a wine consultant at many wineries and cideries in Virginia, but she is more than a consultant for Stanburn, she is the wine maker.
4. Paul Krop, Good Luck Cellars, Kilmarnock, VA
Seven years ago, vineyard owners, Paul and Katie Krop shared a vision of creating a community-based vineyard and winery out of a parcel of land that had been used for mining top soil, sand, and gravel. The earth remaining from the mine was full of sand and gravel – perfect for cultivating grapevines. With the help of an amazing team of experts and the support of family and friends, Paul and Katie have planted 12 acres of vines and an impressive production facility for all of their estate-grown wines.
5. David Lawson, MountainRose Vineyards, Wise, VA
Each member of the Lawson family uses their own talents to make the MountainRose Vineyards venture successful. David, with his passion for growing and creating, oversees the vineyards as well as making the wine.
6. Peter Rausse, Stone Mountain Vineyards, Dyke, VA
Following in his father’s footsteps in the vineyard, Peter has been involved in the Virginia wine industry for almost a decade. In addition to his work at the family winery, he has worked with winemakers such as Kirsty Harmon of Blenheim Vineyards.
7. Mike Panczak, White Hall Vineyards,
White Hall’s winemaker is Mike Panczak. Mike’s winemaking background began in California’s Santa Maria Valley, with initial experience at Qupe and later at Foxen Vineyards. After classes at Davis & Fresno, he completed his Oenology degree at Hancock College in Santa Maria. He also studied Viticulture at the post-graduate level at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo prior to a stint at Bridlewood in Santa Ynez.
