Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia’s pioneer farm wineries, with the oldest of their vines dating back to the 1970s. They make Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, of course, but they also make wines found at few other Virginia wineries—Gewürztraminer and Sangiovese.

Family owned and operated, Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery lies in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge, in the shadow of Afton Mountain. The first vines were planted in 1985 and the winery opened in 2002. At Cardinal Point, the winemaker, Tim Gorman, is also the vineyard manager. Tim enjoys expressing his creative side in the cellar, as evidenced by their very popular signature blends.

Nestled in the heart of Nelson County wine country, Flying Fox Vineyard is a small, family-run winery. After many years of growing grapes they recently made the leap and started producing their own wines. You are invited to come by and taste their limited production award wines including Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Viognier. Enjoy the fireplace in the winter months and the gorgeous mountain views from the patio in the summer.

You will experience wines once enjoyed by Kings and Queens, Plutarch, Shakespeare and Saint Finnian and written about in Beowulf and The 13th Warrior. Mead has been recreated at Hill Top in the various forms once associated with fertility, sex, love, poetry and health. It also tastes great! 5. Pollak Vineyards

Pollak Vineyards is a small family-owned winery founded in 2003 with the purchase of a 98-acre farm just west of Charlottesville, Virginia. Today they have 26 acres of French vinifera planted with the intent of making estate grown wine that has the finesse and balance of the traditional French varietals.

Opened in 2008, the tasting room and patio offer a setting to enjoy the wine and some of the best of Virginia’s wine country.

Veritas, a family business owned by Andrew and Patricia Hodson, opened for business in June 2002, with the help of their daughter Emily they have succeeded in consistently producing a range of complex and elegant wines. The idyllic setting is easy to find but hard to leave, located just off I-64 at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The unique wines of Veritas are all of high quality, derived from vitis vinifera with the exception of one French hybrid. Their philosophy is to make wine with the classic, old-style principles of viticulture and vinification, at the same time using state of the art technology to capture varietal and regional character.

Blue Mountain Brewery is a unique destination in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. They are open to the public, bringing the revolution of real hand-crafted American beer to this corner of the world. All of their ales and lagers are produced on site where they hand craft 2,500 barrels per year (about 80,000 gallons). Stop by and sample their fine, small-batch beers, enjoy something from their kitchen, see their hops vines, and tour their brewing facilities.

Their Basecamp Brewpub is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains with a lodge style atmosphere. They brew authentic craft beer in the brewhouse with a traditional German-style brewing system (copper kettles) and pour fresh from 12 taps in the pub area.

The menu specializes hickory wood fired smoked dishes and pub fare. In addition, they make homemade root beer & ginger beer fresh on tap too and offer children their own special menu.

Head to Bold Rock and Taste the Difference! They’re a farm winery on 50 acres by Wintergreen in Nelson County, Virginia. Visit the cidery for tastings, tours, gifts and hard cider to go. Watch the progress on construction of the permanent timber frame cidery on the hill above the Rockfish River. Their outdoor tables are a great place to enjoy a cold BOLD one with friends. You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy their ciders by the river. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome.

Free tastings of Bold Rock and Crimson Ridge premium hard ciders are on offer for anyone 21 or over. They sell Bold Rock by the glass or bottle to enjoy at the tasting bar, on the deck or with a picnic on the farm. Packaged apple juice is available for children and they may even have tastings of fresh apple juice if they happen to be crushing at the time you visit.
