Sitting here, watching the cursor blink, thinking about two quality Charlottesville-based businesses that are currently for sale. One of our Scoutologists told me this morning that Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt on The CVille Downtown Mall is on the market.
While the Downtown location seems to serve heavy traffic, it certainly faces tremendous competition. In a five-block footprint, prospective customers have the following “sweet-based shops” to choose from: Splendora’s Gelato, Chap’s Ice Cream, My Chocolate Shoppe, Wine Loves Chocolate and Kilwin’s, a chocolate, fudge and ice cream shop that opened earlier this year.
Talk about some sticky competition!
OVER COFFEE AT GREENBERRY’S LAST WEEK, another Scoutologist told me that Oil & Vinegar in the Barracks Road Shopping Center is also currently for sale.
In business for 10+ years, Oil & Vinegar is a Barracks Road staple, especially around the holidays. Its current ownership team is asking $200,000 for the business.
THE FITZROY GRAND OPENING is on the near horizon. The Fitzroy is the new restaurant concept located in the former Blue Light space on The Downtown Mall. Signage was installed on Wednesday afternoon. The glass entrance is sophisticated and chic, and the inside looks very approachable.
Backed by the same ownership group as Trinity Irish Pub on The UVa Corner, The Fitzroy will offer its take on classic American dishes. We also bet the craft cocktail menu will be robust and welcoming.

SPEAKING OF GRAND OPENINGS, The Juice Place is now open on The Downtown Mall, a few doors from Zo.Ca.Lo. Restaurant in Central Place.
The father-son combo behind the Market Street Market (an awesome grocery and deli next to The Maclin Building) is the same tandem behind The Juice Place.
The Juice Place serves smoothies (16-ounces for $6.50), fresh-squeezed juice, yogurt bowls, rice bowls and salads. I suggest the Papaya Sunrise Smoothie – it’s off the chain!!
